5 valuable lessons I learnt in 2016

If you ask pretty much anybody in the world what kind of year 2016 was I can guarantee you that the majority of people will say it was a crappy year with wars and terrorist attacks. Additionally, the fact that Donald Trump not only ran for president but actually got elected as the president of the USA is merely depressing.

On a more personal scale, my 2016 wasn’t perhaps as good as I had hoped it would be and just like anyone else I had my ups but also my downs. I am a firm believer that one should never regret anything (unless you murdered someone or did some other drastic thing that negatively impacts others). No matter what happens - good or bad - we learn from it.

So, this is it. Standing here at the finish line of 2016, looking back over the past year, here is a list of 5 things this year taught me:

  1. 16-1.jpgIf there's something you dislike about yourself or your life - change it. If it can't be changed, learn to accept it. I feel like this goes for everything in your life. No matter if it’s physical insecurities, your school, workplace, relationships etc, don’t settle if you’re not happy or learning to be.

  1. f1d5e450b28facaa789b259ab7930256.jpgAs long as you're hygienic and fresh, how you look and what you wear doesn't matter. This one is mainly aimed at my fellow girls out there. Go to school in sweats and no makeup if you feel like it! As long as you’re clean and don’t smell bad, nobody cares. (Also, a side note for not perhaps all boys, but some of you boys reading this - stop assuming that us girls get up early in the morning to get ready and do our makeup for your sake and so that you will find us attractive. Believe me, we don’t. I know I look just as good without my makeup, yet I decide to wear it because I like how it looks and it makes me happy. Quite frankly, I couldn’t care less what your opinions on what I chose to do with my appearance are, so please just keep them to yourselves)

  1. 869193bf3c0ebe0dc4a4fa5036e56bf9.jpgDon't put your happiness in anybody else's hands. This one sounds simple but it’s easier said than done. The only person you can truly rely on to make you happy is yourself. If you put your happiness in other people’s hands they’ll end up letting you down and you will feel like crap.

4. Tolerance is the key. The only way you’re going to make it through school in one piece without losing your mind is learning to tolerate the people around you and not letting them get on your nerves. I feel like this is especially important in a school like ours, filled with lots of people from different cultures, backgrounds and speaking different languages. We’re all different and see things from different perspectives and just because someone has an opinion that differs from yours, it doesn’t have to be a bad thing.

5. The American voting system is messed up and very confusing. I feel like this last one is pretty self-explanatory. Clinton got more votes than Trump, yet Trump won the American presidential election? What?

  2. (sorry accidentally posted the comment before I was done ^) This blog post shone a light upon the year even I thought was a bit crappy and made me laugh. The title is not the most eye-catching, but does fit the blog post very well. The statements are simple and well formulated, and are actually quite good advice.

  3. I liked this blog post for a few reasons. A: I really enjoyed the way that you altered between personal matters as well as more general matters. B: the use of GIFs made it more enjoyable to read and it was a nice way of expressing your thoughts as well as emotions. C: The explanations are well written and I understood what it was that you wanted to say with this post. Well done!

  4. I really liked this post because it the was very clear and informative. The title was affective because it caught my attention and it summarised the topic well. I really liked the pictures a lot because they added humour to the text. I also really liked how this post wasn't just informative but it also taught the readers these lessons. The layout of this post was great because every 'lesson' had a clear subtitle and picture to go with it. The language is also appropriate for this text

  5. Very nice blog. It teaches valuable life lessons and is very inspirational. The only weak point was the title.

  6. I like how this was short and informative but entertaining because of the pictures. It was fun to read and I don't think you should have done anything differently.

  7. I don't really like the layout of this post as far as aesthetics go (other wise, no complaints). I've got nothing much to say about the language as I didn't spot any ground breaking mistakes in grammar, punctuation, etc. Title summarizes the post very well and the 'points'/lessons are both adequate and relatable. However, I found your last point somewhat 'inappropriate'. I am not a Trump supporter, but it looks like to me that you haven't completely understood the US presidential election system and thus such statement is rather unnecessary. In the end, this post is both interesting and 'educational' to some degree.

  8. The format of this text is quite effective, and the content is presented in an interesting way. You could add some kind of conclusion instead of just ending with your 5th point. This would tie things up nicely.
